iModeller 3D Professional Edition: Tutorial 1

Step 2: Working with iModeller 3D Professional

Congrats! All images taken. Now you may start working with iModeller 3D Professional Edition.

back

Open the images with iModeller 3D Professional Edition. Use the "Load Images..." command from the "File" menu.

The images are loaded into the image list on the left side of the work view. You start working in the "Adjust" view. Browse your image selection to see if you opened the right files. You may also adjust certain image values (RGB, Brightness/Contrast). A uniform image quality will lead to a nice texture result.

Then, activate the "Calibrate" mode ("calibrate index in the work view). iModeller 3D Professional Edition automatically detects the ellipses of the object pattern in every image. If a sufficient number of ellipses is found, this information then is used to reconstruct the required camera values (position, focal length etc). The detected images are marked with a green ellipse. The calibration accuracy is indicated by a value under each image in the image list. If an image is not calibrated automatically, you may set the ellipses' positions manually.

As soon as all images are calibrated, activate the "Mask" view ("Mask" index in the work view). The object is masked in every image to separate it from the image background. This is done with a colored mask layer. It is painted automatically in every image as soon as the "Mask" view is activated.

The automaticlly painted masks of the deer images are quite good - thanks to the effort invested during the image acquisition. Still, some adjustments have to be made. Activate the Pen Tool and the Erase Mode (menu bars) and delete the mask covering the object pattern. Then activate the Paint Mode with the "Space" key and roughly paint the mask parts in the horns and face area of the deer. Next, activate the Fill Tool. Set the Fill Tool's tolerance to "10%" and acitvate the Erase Mode with the "Space" key. Now erase the painted mask in the head's area. We recommend that you work image by image - this way you will save time (use the PgUp/PgDn keys to jump to the previous/next image in the image list).

As soon as all masks are created, the 3D model can be reconstructed. Activate the "3D" view ("3D" index in the work view). The 3D model is generated and displayed in the work view. Next, the texture is automatically generated and mapped onto the model.

Using the default settings, the model could need some improvement. Open the "Preferences" dialogue ("Edit"[Windows]/"iModeller 3D" menu [Mac]). Set the "Voxel Resolution" value to "130" and the "Voxel Smoothing" value to "9". Close the dialogue with "OK".

The model is calculated using the new settings. Use the slider in the lower part of the work view to raise the number of polygons to 2500. Expecially the more filigrane parts of the horns have significantly been improved.

The model can now be exported. Choose "Export" from the "File" menu. Save the model as a "VRML" file.

Enter the desired file name and location and hit "OK". In the export dialogue click on the "Cameras" index. Deactivate the "Export Cameras" check box and close the dialogue with "OK".
